SEC Spring Football Weather
Now those who have been long time viewers of MCWC know that I have a HUGE passion for college football, especially SEC football, and especially AUBURN TIGER FOOTBALL! Well, with spring practice starting up, I thought I’d do a little research to give you a better idea of what kind of weather each SEC school “normally” can expect this time of year. I included a couple of extreme weather events, as well! Hope you enjoy!
University of Alabama: Tuscaloosa, AL: You would expect temps during the day to reach into the upper 50s to lower 60s with a mostly clear sky. Extreme weather events can include severe thunderstorms and even some wet snow flakes this time of year. Winds can be gusty out of the southwest from time to time. Of course, the Superstorm of ‘93 delivered half a foot of snow to the Alabama campus, on March 12th, 1993.
University of Arkansas: Fayetteville, AR: Temperatures usually climb into the lower 60s during the middle portion of the month, but extremes can be the norm in this home of the Razorback’s town. Severe weather, including tornadoes can be quite popular during March, and in extreme events, some wet late season snow could fly.
Auburn University: Auburn, AL: Temperatures usually climb into the lower 60s by early to mid March. The close proximity to the Gulf of Mexico means that humid weather conditions can develop as early as March, however, late season frosts and freezes can dampen the spirits of those longing for the heat of summer on this “loveliest village on the plains!” Late season cold fronts can deliver thunderstorms and rain. The Superstorm of ‘93 dumped an impressive 9 inches of snowfall on this southeastern Alabama city.
Univeristy of Florida: Gainesville, FL: Humid, humid, and humid! Temperatures can reach as high as the 80s as early as the first to middle portion of March, with a good deal of humidity. Late season cold fronts and gulf breezes are responsible for thunderstorm outbreaks from time to time. Watch out for that lightning!
University of Georgia: Athens, GA: Average high temperatures climb into the lower to middle 60s by mid March. While March tends to be a pretty tranquil month on average, weather conditions can include a variety of showers and gusty thunderstorms, late season chill behind cold fronts, and even a few late season flurries, mostly early in the month.
University of Kentucky: Lexington, KY: Average highs for mid March climb into the middle 50s. Early season severe weather outbreaks can occur anytime during the month of March, and you still have to be on the look out for some late season accumulating snowfall events. That said, most snow that falls during March quickly melts after a day or two. Temperatures at night typically fall below freezing.
Louisiana State University: Baton Rouge, LA: Weather conditions are already turning quite muggy by March, down on the bayou. Afternoon showers and storms can be quite frequent by mid to late March, though you still have a good amount of tranquil weather days as well. Late season cold fronts can deliver gusty winds and temps down into the 40s from time to time, but this is not usual.
University of Mississippi: Oxford, MS: Daytime temperatures typically climb into the lower to middle 60s by mid month with mostly tranquil weather. Severe weather can be an issue anytime during the month, with storm systems approaching from the west, tapping into that GOM moisture. Late season cold air events can still deliver a frost.
Mississippi State University: Starkville, MS: Daytime temperatures typically climb into the middle 60s by mid month with mostly tranquil weather. Severe weather can be an issue anytime during the month, with storm systems approaching from the west, tapping into that GOM moisture. Late season cold air events can still deliver a frost.
University of South Carolina: Columbia, SC: Temperatures are already flirting with the 70 degree mark by mid month. Late season cold air outbreaks can still deliver a frost, however. Gusty thunderstorm chances increase as the month wears on. Winds can often be quite gusty as they flow in a downsloping fashion off the crest of the higher peaks in the Appalachians to the west.
University of Tennessee: Knoxville, TN: March can deliver a variety of weather to this eastern TN city, located in the central valley. Temperatures normally climb into the upper 50s by mid month, though snow flurries can also (and often times do) fly through the month. It can be quite windy at times during March, with extreme temperature changes in short periods of time.
Vanderbilt University: Nashville, TN: March warms faster across middle TN than that of east TN, with temperatures approaching the lower 60s by mid month. Thunderstorm events to late season snow flurries can present themselves in middle TN during March, with severe weather an issue from time to time.
