Happy Thanksgiving

If you want to learn the lesson of Thanksgiving then it is essential — actually it is critical — to adopt a “Thankful” attitude in your life.

When you focus on your God given gifts and appreciate what you have been given, you are leading a Thankful life. When you get up in the morning, jump out of bed, and are thankful you are alive, that is leading a Thankful life. When you sincerely are grateful for your health, your family, your friends, your job and sustenance, you are leading a Thankful existence.

Don’t worry, it is okay to want more than you have – especially if your value system is healthy and you want more so you can do more to help others. Don’t forget to be Thankful when things are going well for you – and, yes, even when they are challenging. Perspective brings happiness in your life, and the right perspective brings meaning into your life. So when you wake up Friday morning, don’t complain that you have eaten too much — thank God you had a great meal and then go to the gym.

This was not sent to you to ask you to forward it to anyone. It was sent to you because I consider you a friend. I am thankful for you and blessed because our paths have crossed. May you have a Thanksgiving weekend that is filled with safety, rest, relaxation, and thankfulness.

Thanks, as always, to the talented Dennis Shekinah for his great photography.  Both of these were snapped last week during the final of three snow events.  Dennis reported around 3 inches of snowfall with the last event.

Longer Range Thoughts (From MCWC: Issued Nov. 23, 2008)

Longer Range Continues To Look Like A Dream (Come True) For Winter WX Lovers: Before I get into what’s coming our way over the next couple of weeks, let’s take a look back at this past week’s winter weather. Remember the average high for last week in Mountain City would be in the lower 50s with an average low in the upper 20s. Here were the numbers, which can be found over on our Climate and Snow Data page. (The first number is the date followed by the low, high, peak wind, rainfall, and snowfall).

16: 27, 34, 22, -, 0.75
17: 25, 35, 26, -, Dusting
18: 20, 26, 25, -, 2.50
19: 11, 40, 17, -, -
20: 26, 45, 26, -, -
21: 14, 28, 35, -, 4.00
22: 5, 38, 16, -, –

Folks, those numbers would be impressive for the dead of winter, but it’s almost unheard of to get such an impressive blast of winter weather during the third week of November. Heck, two of the days our high temperature didn’t even reach where we would normally be for a low this time of year. Couple that with a weekly total of 7.25 inches of snowfall in Mountain City and yes, I would say this winter has gotten off to a fast start.

What’s as equally impressive is when looking into the longer range I see a negative NAO along with tremendous blocking over the top. This will lead to a continued hammering of WELL below normal cold (and in some cases, record cold) not only as we head through the last week of November, but as we go on into December. In addition to the extreme cold (and the northwest upslope snow events), we’re really going to have to keep our eye on what will become an increasingly active/ stormy southern stream of the jet for the potential of some kind of widespread major winter weather maker sometime during the first couple of weeks of December. For much more in depth research and ideas as to why the mountains of Johnson County should see a colder and snowier winter than normal, please see Bill’s Annual Winter Outlook For Johnson County.

Moral of this story I guess is to say to all of you winter weather fans out there, hold onto your hats because it’s going to be a wild (white) ride for quite some time to come, as this truly is a special pattern we’re in if you’re a winter weather fan. For those not so fond of winter weather, I might add that you try working on that…if not, it very well may be a long stretch for you.

Just some random thoughts on a COLD November night.

Checking in quickly tonight as most of our time these days is spent watching and studying the model runs on what looks to be a continued very busy time of things in the weather department with storms and cold…

Last night’s clipper system really impressed.  We “upped” our snowfall projection yesterday during the late morning hours to the 1-3″ range, but even that was not enough as most were in the 3-6″ range.  That’s the 3rd snowfall this week, and the 3rd snowfall that “out did” itself- something to watch as we head deeper into the winter.

Specific snowfall totals include:

  • Mountain City: 4 inches
  • Trade: 3 inches
  • Shady Valley: 4 inches
  • Forge Creek: 7.25 inches
  • Stone Mountain: 6 inches
  • Johnson City: 2 inches

It sure is tough getting used to running in this cold weather.  I’m still not sure whether or not I enjoy jogging in 30 degree type stuff or the 80s.  Even though I’m a cold weather fan, I think it’s a little easier (at least on this body) jogging during the warmer months of the year.  At any rate, it’s extremely important to stick to your work out plan no matter what Mother Nature throws your way.  The only thing that will keep me from my daily run is lightning.

I’m just about sick and tired of hearing these AL (and even some Auburn fans) fans talk about how bad BAMA will run the score up on my beloved Auburn Tigers.  Thankfully I still have a week to go before the most intense rivalry in all of college football kicks off, but I sincerely believe in Auburn and the idea that we may “shock” some people on the 29th.  I say “shock” not for me, but by listening to some fans out there, they’re not even giving Coach Tubs and company a chance in this year’s Iron Bowl.

Posts will get back into that “off schedule” routine next week as I hit the road to visit the family in AL for Thanksgiving.  That said, I can assure you that you’ll have several posts a day…I experienced major difficulties with my wireless card last trip, but these have been resolved now.

Anyway…I hope y’all have a great night and weekend!  As always, for the most accurate weather forecast and material for Mountain City and Johnson County, log onto www.mountaincityweathercenter.com
